The UNEP/GEF Project brief entitled “Reversing Environmental Degradation Trends in the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand” (hereafter called the South China Sea Project) was approved by the GEF Council in November 2000, following its approval by the 15th meeting and special session of COBSEA[1], held in Pattaya, Thailand, 11-12th September 2000.

The overall goals of the project are: to create an environment at the regional level, in which collaboration and partnership in addressing environmental problems of the South China Sea, between all stakeholders, and at all levels is fostered and encouraged; and to enhance the capacity of the participating governments to integrate environmental considerations into national development planning.

The specific objectives and activities of the South China Sea Project Training Programme include provision for the conduct of a regional training workshop and national echo seminars on the sustainable management of mangrove ecosystems. The Training Programme was developed by the Regional Scientific and Technical Committee of the South China Sea Project during 2006.
